BASINGSTOKE Ladies are champions of Hampshire Division One after they drew their top-of-the-table clash with visiting Aldershot and Farnham last Saturday.
This also means the team are promoted to the South League with one game left in the season – they take on Andover this weekend.
Despite the home side having two key defenders unavailable, the makeshift defence held strong against a flurry of early attacks by the opposition.
Basingstoke then came into the game, with the wingers using their pace and skill to get the ball up to the forwards.
They eventually took the lead as Jo Pett put an excellent cross into the D for Mel Trevaskis to deflect into the goal.
Aldershot and Farnham levelled the scoring before half-time with a well taken goal from open play.
After the break, the visitors upped the pressure early on, but again the defence held strong and was helped by the midfield being very disciplined at getting back to help.
Basingstoke thought they had gone ahead again, when Trevaskis seemed to have scored her second of the game with the end of her stick.
However, the umpire decided the ball had hit the back of Trevaskis’ stick and disallowed the goal.
A late short corner from the visitors made the home side nervous, but a firm save by goalkeeper Gemma Carswell alleviated the pressure.
The game ended 1-1 and the Basingstoke Ladies were left to celebrate winning the league.
