BASINGSTOKE Ladies won their own pre-season triangular hockey tournament at Down Grange.

They had a number of new faces, including player/coach Lisa Scarborough, who made her home debut in centre-midfield.

They opened with a 2-0 win over Wycombe as new captain Catriona Bausor hit two goals after good work from Fi Holdcroft.

The second game saw them draw 0-0 with Henley, with goalkeeper Gemma Carswell showing good early-season form.

Basingstoke won the tournament after the final match between Wycombe and Henley ended 1-1.

Bausor said: “I’m really happy that we have hit the ground running in the first pre-season tournaments and it is great to see new players integrating so quickly.

“We are aware, however, that we still have areas to improve on in preparation for our first league game, so we will continue to put in the hard work.”

The ladies play Teddington this weekend and then Eastcote away the following Saturday, before the start of their South League 3B campaign.

The men won 4-1 against Newbury and Thatcham and drew 2-2 at Wallingford in their triangular tournament.

The men now face a run of friendlies against Trojans, Ashford and Oxford before the newly-promoted side make their Hampshire/Surrey Division 1 debut away at Winchester on October 4.

This Saturday is the club’s annual open day at Down Grange.

The under-eights and under-10s will train from 9am, the ladies will take to the pitch from 10.30 and the men from 2pm. There will be an afternoon barbecue and the bar will be open with an evening social to follow.

On Sunday, there is training for under-14s (9am) and under-12s (9.30am).

If you fancy picking up a stick this year, go along and speak to the captains and coaches.
