BASINGSTOKE darts ace Paul Hogan’s good form continued as he claimed a second Hampshire Open title.

The 50-year-old saw off the challenge of a 268-strong field at Southampton Novotel, beating Antony Hayman 6-1 in the final.

The victory saw Hogan become just the second player to win multiple Hampshire Open titles, following in the footsteps of another Basingstoke player, Colin Monk, who has won it three times.

The Buckskin resident’s previous triumph came in 2002, but he is currently enjoying an excellent 2014. He appeared at the BDO World Championships at Lakeside in January, before putting together a fine run at the British Open.

At the Hampshire Open, Hogan beat Gary Blackwood 4-2 in the quarter-finals, clinching victory with an 11-dart leg.

In the last four, he faced Tony Broughton, who had earlier beaten Monk. However, Hogan was able to do what his friend and rival had failed to do, beating Broughton 5-2 to reach the final.

The delivery driver raced into a 4-0 lead against Hayman in the final, before going on to win 6-1 and claim the £1,000 winners’ prize.

“I am very pleased,” Hogan said afterwards. “I’ve won it twice now and it’s very nice to win the double.

“It is a good feeling and I’m happy about my performance. The atmosphere was great and the crowd really got behind me.”
