STEFAN Brown says it would be a dream come true to score against former club AFC Totton on Saturday.

The 23-year-old joined Basingstoke Town from the south Hampshire club over the summer but has fond memories of his time at the Testwood Stadium and is looking forward to returning.

“I was buzzing when I found out the draw,” Brown said. “I had some great times at Totton and everyone was really kind to me so it will be nice to go back and see them all again.

“Hopefully we can get the win and go through. Everyone dreams about scoring against their former club and I am no different.

“It’s going to be tough though. I know a lot of the boys down there and they are good players who could play at a higher level.”

Brown has had to settle for a place on the substitutes’ bench for much of the season so far but the striker proved his worth by coming on to grab a late equaliser in last week’s game against Eastbourne Borough.

“My first goal for the club did not mean anything so to finally get a goal that meant something was a nice feeling,” he said. “It was on my wrong foot and I had to concentrate but I got it right and it was good to see the ball hit the back of the net.”

With Tim Sills suspended for Saturday’s FA Trophy tie, Brown looks set to be handed a rare start – and he is determined to make the most of the opportunity.

“Nobody wants to get their place in the side through injury or suspension but I have got to take my chances when I get them,” he said. “The manager told me that he sees me as a player for the long-term but if I get a chance I have got to take it and hopefully I can force my way into the side sooner rather than later.

“Every player wants to play every minute but I understand that you need a strong squad at this level. I’ll just go out and try my best if given a chance.

“I am having a lot of fun at the club. The lads are great and Jason is the most honest gaffer I have played under. He tells you exactly why you are playing or not. That is what I want and I am really enjoying it.”

It has been a difficult couple of months for Basingstoke, who have been struggling to win games – but Brown is sure that things will improve soon.

“We are hoping that getting that late goal against Eastbourne is a turning point and we can pick up a few wins,” he said. “Little mistakes are costing us at the moment but hopefully we can start moving up the table.”
