JUSTIN Rose finished in a tie for sixth place at the opening event of the 2015-16 PGA Tour.

The north Hampshire golfer travelled to Silverado CC, in California, for the Frys.com Open. He was in contention throughout, but finished three shots behind winner Emiliano Grillo, who beat Kevin Na in a play-off to win.

Rose made a good start, shooting a five-under-par round of 67 on the opening day. He followed that up with rounds of 69 (-3) and 68 (-4) to leave himself on -12, two shots off the lead, going into the closing day.

The former Robert May's School pupil was in with a realistic chance of winning midway through his final round and was 14-under-par after 11 holes. However, bogeys at three of the last seven holes saw him drop out of contention and into a tie for sixth place.

Rose, who remains seventh in the world rankings, turns his attention to the European Tour this weekend, competing at the UBS Hong Kong Open, which gets under way on Thursday.
