JUSTIN Rose produced a strong final round to finish in a tie for second place at the PGA Tour's season-ending event, the Tour Championship.

The north Hampshire golfer carded a closing round of 66 (-4) to move up six places on the final day, ending up in a tie for second place alongside Henrik Stenson and Australia's Danny Lee.

Finishing as runner-up was not enough to earn Rose the $10million jackpot available to the winner of the FedEx Cup. That prize went to Jordan Spieth, who won the Tour Championship by four shots to claim overall victory.

However, Rose did move up four places to eighth place in the final FedEx Cup standings, winning $600,000 and taking his earnings from the weekend up to just over $1.2m.

The former Robert May's School pupil had to overcome a sticky start to his opening round at East Lake, in Atlanta. He was three-over-par through 14 holes, but birdies at 15, 16 and 17 saw him card a level-par first round of 70.

Four birdies and two bogeys during the second round left Rose on -2 going into the weekend, while a third round of 71 (+1) and left him eighth going into the final day.

The 35-year-old made a fast start to his closing round and was four-under-par at the turn.

A double-bogey six at the 10th hole knocked him out of contention for overall victory, and while birdies at holes 12, 13 and 15 had him on track for a high finish, a bogey at 17 meant that he was unable to claim second place on his own.

The result saw Rose move up a place to seventh in the world rankings. He is expected to take a few weeks off before competing in the European Tour's Final Series, which begin at the end of October.
