JUSTIN Rose overcame a nightmare start to claim a top-20 finish at The Barclays, the opening event of the FedEx Cup Play-offs.

The north Hampshire golfer made just one birdie during a tough opening day, carding a seven-over-par round of 77.

Just five players had a worse first round, but Rose bounced back in fine style, hitting seven birdies and carding 65 (-5) on day two, avoiding the cut.

His good form continued on day three, the 35-year-old making another seven birdies and not dropping a single shot to complete a third round of 63 (-7), moving up to 14th in the standings.

Rose was unable to make any further progress during the final round, carding 70 (par) to slip to a share of 16th place in the final reckoning, but it was a fine recovery after his terrible start.

The former Robert May's School pupil remains fifth in the world rankings, while he has slipped three places to eighth in the FedEx Cup standings heading into the Deutsche Bank Championship, which gets under way at TPC Boston on Friday.
