MORE than 250 visiting golfers travelled to Basingstoke GC to compete in the club's annual open week festival.

The week of action began last Monday, with the Men's Senior Open taking place. Bearwood Lakes' Geoffrey Davies came out on top with a winning total of 39 Stableford points, one clear of second-placed Michael Gilbert (East Horton) and Steve Lewington (Newbury and Crookham), who was third on countback.

After a one-day break, the action continued on Wednesday, with 50 pairs from around the south of England taking part in the Mixed Pairs Better Ball Open.

Puttenham Golf Club's David and Pat Deacon won this event with 43 points, beating Bill and Christine Walker on countback. Gary Anderson and Lynn Pack were two points back in third.

Thursday saw 37 young golfers compete in the club's Junior Open, with the competition attracting players from as far afield as Jersey.

However, it was a fairly local player who won the event, Christian Lindgreen from Oak Park, near Farnham, edging out Stoneham's Laurence Cherry on countback for the gross prize.

Lindgreen made it a double by winning the Wallis Trophy for the best 36-hole nett score, shooting 133 (-7) to beat Maddi Ripiner (Meon Valley) by one shot.

The final event of the week saw 50 male pairs compete over 36 holes, with different formats in the morning and afternoon.

Andrew Thomas and Craig Neve (Tidworth Garrison) amassed 85 points to win, with Paul Dimond and Simon Dymoke (The Wiltshire) coming second.

Southampton's Luke Russell and Josh Mariner finished third, with Russell recording a hole-in-one at the 175-yard, par-three fifth hole.
