JUSTIN Rose was unable to mount a final-day charge to win the PGA Championship, finishing fourth at Whistling Straits.

The north Hampshire golfer went into yesterday's final round at the Wisconsin course just three shots off the lead and was very much in contention for the first 12 holes.

A birdie at the par-five 11th took him to within two shots of leader Jason Day, but Rose found a deep greenside bunker with his approach to the 13th and was only able to make a double-bogey six.

The 35-year-old picked up a shot at the 16th, but two wayward shots resulted in a bogey at the last that cost him a share of third place.

Rose ended up fourth on -14, six shots behind winner Day. However, he is up a place to fifth in the world rankings and also sits fifth in the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup standings heading into the season-ending play-offs, which get under way with The Barclays next weekend.
