JUSTIN Rose was unable to hold onto his place at the top of the leaderboard on the final day of the World Golf Championships - Bridgestone Invitational.

The north Hampshire golfer went into yesterday's last round at Firestone CC, in Ohio, in a tie for the lead with Jim Furyk following an outstanding third round of 63 (-7).

However, he could only muster a closing round of 72 (+2), his worst of the tournament, to finish in a share of third place on -7, four shots behind Ireland's Shane Lowry, who won the event by two strokes from Bubba Watson.

Rose struggled with the putter throughout the final round and found himself two-over-par after seven holes.

He made a birdie at the ninth, but immediately gave the shot back at the next hole, while a birdie at the 16th was cancelled out by a bogey at the 18th that cost him third place on his own.

Rose will be hoping to challenge near the top of the leaderboard again during the final major tournament of the year, the PGA Championship, which gets under way at Whistling Straits, in Wisconsin, on Thursday.
