JUSTIN Rose dropped a couple of places on the final day of the US Open, carding a closing round of 71 (+1) to finish in a tie for 27th at Chambers Bay.

The north Hampshire golfer ended the tournament on +5, 10 shots behind winner Jordan Spieth, who emerged victorious by a single shot after Dustin Johnson three-putted the final hole.

Rose was out of contention going into the final round, eight shots off the lead in 25th place, and he got off to a bad start. The 34-year-old dropped a shot at the first hole, with further bogeys following at holes three and five.

However, the former Robert May's School pupil then managed to turn things around. A birdie at the par-five eighth meant he was two-over-par at the halfway point, while a run of three consecutive birdies on the back nine briefly had him under par for the day.

Unfortunately, having picked up shots at holes 12, 13 and 14, Rose then proceeded to make bogey at 15 and a double-bogey six at the par-four 16th after taking a penalty shot and finding a bunker.

He made birdie at the last hole to complete a one-over-par round of 71, dropping two places to 27th in the final standings.

Despite never really being in contention to regain the US Open title he won in 2013, Rose is up to fourth in the world rankings, moving above Bubba Watson, who missed the cut at Chambers Bay.

Rose is not in action next weekend and is unlikely to play again until he returns to Britain to compete in the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, which will take place at Gullane from July 9 to July 12.
