LES Greatrix came from behind to claim top seed status in Hartley Wintney Golf Club's Churchill Cup.

The competition, one of the most prestigious in the calender at the club, is played over a mixture of formats. After 36 holes of strokeplay spread over two days, the top eight players go through to the quarter-finals, at which point it turns into a matchplay event.

Bob Pritchard was out in front at the end of the first day, carding a nett round of 65 (-6) to lead by four shots from Shaun Lewis and Lee Poulter.

However, Pritchard was unable to replicate his fine form during the second day of competition and only just reached the knock-out stages, falling to eighth place due to a closing round of 81 (+10).

His slide down the leaderboard allowed Greatrix, who shot 73 (+2) in the opening round, to sneak up on the rails and grab first place, thanks to an excellent second round of 65 (-6).

Poulter was more consistent, recording a second round of 71 (par) to finish as runner-up, two shots behind the winner, with Lewis a further two strokes back in third.

Junior player Jamie Mullin, Nico van Vuuren, Peter Lawrence and Benjamin Cornwell are the other players who will compete in next month's quarter-finals, with the last three games due to be played in mid August.

Mullin has been in good form of late, winning the club's Junior Medal thanks to an excellent gross round of 73 (+2). The six-handicapper beat Tom Dowe by three strokes.
