JUSTIN Rose remains seven shots off the pace after two rounds of the US Open.

The north Hampshire golfer had an up-and-down second day at Chambers Bay, but eventually carded a round of 70 (par), to go into the weekend in a share of 28th place on +2.

Beginning from the 10th tee, Rose made the perfect start, securing a birdie at his first hole, and while he bogeyed 13, further birdies at 14, 16 and one, his 10th hole, had him under-par for the tournament.

However, a bogey at two knocked him back to level par and disaster struck at the 506-yard, par-four seventh. Despite hitting the fairway with his drive, Rose then found the rough and a greenside bunker on his way to a triple-bogey seven.

The former Robert May's School recovered well, making a 17-foot putt for birdie at the next hole. His final hole was also dramatic, playing partner Jason Day collapsing with a bout of vertigo as he walked down a steep slope, but he was able to play on and Rose secured a par to go into the weeked at +2.

The lead remains at -5, with Masters champion Jordan Spieth, who also played with Rose during the opening rounds, and Patrick Reed leading the way.

Tiger Woods is one of several big names not to have made the cut. He could only record a second round of 76 (+6) to add to his disasterous opening round of 80 (+10). Bubba Watson, Graeme McDowell and Rickie Fowler join him in having the weekend off.

Rose appears to be in good form, hitting more than 80 per cent of both fairways and greens over the opening two rounds. However, whenever he makes a mistake, it seems to be costing him at least one shot.

The 34-year-old will get his third round under way at 12.05pm (8.05pm BST) today, playing alongside Australia's Marcus Fraser.
