JUSTIN Rose suffered play-off agony at the Memorial Tournament, losing to Sweden's David Lingmerth on the third extra hole.

The north Hampshire golfer went into the final round at Muirfield Village, in Ohio, with a three-shot lead, but needed an excellent pitch at the 18th to secure a par and take it to a play-off, carding a level-par round of 72.

Rose seemed to be favourite to take the title when Lingmerth, who had shot -3 on the final day, found a fairway bunker on the first extra hole. A fine putt secured par for the former Robert May's School pupil, but the Swede matched him to extend the tournament to a 72nd hole.

It was Rose's turn to find the bunker from the tee on the second play-off hole, but he managed to reach the putting surface, while Lingmerth put his second shot into a green side trap. However, both saved par to take the play-off to a third hole.

Having played the 18th twice, the pair took on the 10th for their third play-off hole. Again Rose found himself in trouble off the tee, hitting into the rough, and his second shot failed to make the green, while two textbook shots from Lingmerth put him in pole position.

Rose left himself a 17ft putt for par and Lingmerth saw his birdie putt roll five feet past. Rose was unable to produce another clutch putt and the Swede made no mistake, finding the bottom of the cup to win the tournament.

Rose said: "I could have put it away by shooting under par out there, but it was a tough day."
