SHERBORNE St John golfer Billy Watson’s excellent season continued as he reached the last 16 of the Boys Amateur Championship before being knocked out by the eventual winner.

The event was held at Prestwick and Dundonald Links, in Scotland, with a 36-hole strokeplay qualifying competition leading to a matchplay finale.

Rounds of 77 (+5) and 74 (+3) saw Watson, pictured, qualify for the matchplay part of the competition in 18th place on +8 and he brushed aside Spain’s Xabier Gorospe in the last 64, winning 3&2.

Italian Guido Migliozzi was Watson’s opponent in the next round and he came through a tight match to win by one hole, setting up a last-16 tie against Sweden’s Oskar Bergvist.

The Swede was the better player on the day, winning 5&3 to knock Watson out, but the North Hants member can at least take solace from the fact that he was beaten by the eventual winner.

Sandford Springs golfer Chris Blunden also travelled to Scotland for the event but he was unable to reach the matchplay stage, rounds of 90 (+19) and 80 (+8) leaving him tied for 193rd in the strokeplay competition.
