JUSTIN Rose was unable to claim the European Tour’s Race to Dubai title after finishing in a tie for 10th at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

The north Hampshire golfer needed to beat leader Henrik Stenson to have any chance of claiming the overall title. The Swede was in imperious form though, winning the tournament by six shots to add the Race to Dubai trophy to the FedEx Cup title he won in America earlier in the year.

Rose said: “It was going to take a great performance to get past Henrik. He’s done well to hold off all challengers this week.

”It’s an emphatic way for him to finish the season and exactly like he did in the FedEx Cup. It’s been a very impressive year.”

Rose got off to a solid start at the DP World Tour Championship, played at Jumeirah Golf Estates, in Dubai, an opening round of 70 (-2) leaving him just two shots behind Stenson after the first day.

He lost further ground during round two, ending the day five shots behind Stenson despite shooting 67 (-5). A third round of 68 (-4) meant he was six shots behind the Swede going into the final day, while a round of 70 (-2) on the final day saw him slip down the leaderboard to 10th.

That proved to be costly, allowing runner-up Ian Poulter to claim second place in the Race to Dubai, with US Open champion Rose having to settle for third.
