Winning the vets award was a fitting end for Dick as the 75-year-old has now decided to retire.

The breaststroke swimmer Dick said: “I am delighted with the award and it is very unexpected with the amount of talent In Basingstoke.

“It is nice as I have now retired and wants to do some travelling I wanted to go out on a high and did this with a medal in my final event which was in same pool at the Daunbe Arena in Budapest, Hungary where Adam Peaty broke his world record last year.”

He added: “I only leant to swim at the age 40 and was taught by Lesley Murray, in the local pool in Fife.

“She taught me the breaststroke in the same style of Dave Wilkie. It saved my life as I was on smoking 50 a day at the time and I gave up smoking for swimming . I have had a wonderful 35 years and took part in my first World Championships in Tokyo in 1986.”
