CAMROSE AC had a match at Cheriton Farm on Sunday last, and Brian Orchard won with 82lb 4oz of carp on pole and pellet.

Bill Atkinson’s 41lb 4oz of carp was good enough for second spot, pole and pellet was the method.

Rob Frost fished long and shallow on pellet for his 34lb 8oz, whilst Danny Williams put pole and paste to good use for 32lb 12oz. All 20 caught.

Adventure AS travelled to Chinnor in Oxfordshire to fish at Upper Farm Fishery, but the results were disappointing, Nick Sargent topped out with 13lb 13oz of carp and bits on pole and maggot, Gary Knights’ 13lb 5oz was also a carp and bits bag, using pole and meat, Graham Spiller caught perch and carp on pole and maggot for his 12lb 14oz whilst Scott Nelson caught 10lb 1oz. All 20 weighed.

Kennet Ospreys had a poor turnout for their match at Frobury Farm, where Steve Telford won with 48lb of carp on pole and meat, Terry Bowles caught carp on paste for his 35lb 6oz, Simon Couling utilised pole and corn for 32lb 6oz of carp. Seven fished and caught.

Camrose AC are at Old Barlows Lake on Sunday, Adventure go to their Willow Pool for an all winners match, Osprey will be at Greenridge Farm and on Saturday. Basingstoke Railway Club are at Frobury Farm Lake Two.

Basingstoke Angling Club was the biggest and arguably the best club in Basingstoke during the late 1960s and 1970s. By the 1980s clubs such as Adventure AS, Basingstoke Kingfishers and Kennet Ospreys started to flourish.

Significantly the demise of river fishing led to the demise of Basingstoke AC that went out of existence several years ago, Kingfishers lost their way too and disappeared, Osprey led the way for a while, but now it is Adventure who seem to be getting it right and of course the smaller clubs like Oxoid, Camrose and Basingstoke Railway Club, with limited memberships, seem to fill a niche and thrive. I can remember putting seventy two pegs in for a Kingfisher match on the River Kennet in the 1980s, Osprey turned out 52 on one club match a few years ago. Now clubs are lucky to get 20 turn out.

Catch me next week.
