LOCAL triathlete Richard Brooke has qualified for the Great Britain team for the 2009 European championships.

The event in Holland will help his preparation for the UK trials for the world championships that will take place later in the year in Australia.

Brooke, a learning and development training consultant at Eli Lilly in Basingstoke, qualified in the 35 to 39 age group at the Steelman race in Eton.

More than 500 athletes contested the 1,500-metre swim, 40k bike ride and 10k run and Brooke came 10th overall in 2hr and 7min.

Having suffered a number of injuries in the last year he was delighted with his performance and is now hoping to build on this success.

He has been competing as a member of the TRI UK triathlon team this summer in a series of national and international races.

The TRI UK team is the largest trade-based triathlon team in the country and contains some of the top age-group champions.
