Bison home hosts a new herd – of horses

THE Basingstoke Arena has staged quad racing on ice and even boxing - but it will break new ground on Saturday when it hosts Icelandic horses on ice.

The event is being put on by the Icelandic Horse Society of Great Britain and 13 members' horses will compete against each other.

There will also be a display by six top riders and their horses from Iceland at the ground-breaking event.

Spokeswoman Doris Russell said: "We wanted to stage an event in the South because there are more horses there.

"We approached the manager at Basingstoke and he was prepared to let us try it and the rates were reasonable."

Icelandic horses stand at just 13 or 14 hands high and they are kitted out with special shoes so that they don't fall on the ice.

Training for the little horses begins when they are four and takes one to two years.

"The competition is not a race," said Russell, who is bringing four horses from her home in Edinburgh. "It's more like a dressage and the horses have a special step, called a tolt.

"It's never been done in Britain before, although it's very popular on the continent and, of course, in Iceland."

The event gets under way at 6pm, with tickets priced at £13 for adults and £8 for children.

I am very surprised to see this happening in the UK. There are potential problems from horse's movement on ice, and the torque going up the leg from the nail grabs can be challenging to the long-term soundness of the horse.
