Hackwood all set for season opener

1:00pm Saturday 20th March 2010

A BUMPER crowd is expected at Hackwood Park tomorrow for their first point-to-point meeting of the season.

The six-race card over fences starts at 2pm, with 92 entries having been submitted.

This after two pony races for children start the day at 12.45pm.

Sandhurst area’s perennial leading rider, Philip York, has two probable mounts, Bachley Gale, one of 18 entries in the Open Maiden, and Doubletoilntrouble in the two-and-a-half mile Maiden for young horses.

York said: “Doubletoilntrouble is an interesting prospect. He’s only just four years old, but he’s been well brought along in Ireland, he’s schooled very well over fences and whatever he does on Sunday, he’s got a bright future.”

Morestead trainer Jenny Gordon could have four runners headed by Wain Mountain, one of only three entries in the Members race.

Nice Pick, disappointing so far this year, is given another chance in the two-and-a-half mile Maiden, while Presenting Express goes for the novice riders event. Gordon will saddle Mandalay Bay for owner/rider Neil Henderson in the Restricted race.

Clerk of the Course Bill Welling has re-aligned both bends and widened two of the seven fences, meeting with the approval of riders and trainers.

Welling described the going on Tuesday as good/good to soft in some places.

Admission to the car parks is £30 and £20 with a £10 discount for single occupancy. Catering, trade stands and children’s amusements will be on site as usual.
