PAIRS from BH Pegasus, Phoenix and Viking clubs were victorious at the annual Basingstoke and District Badminton League Restricted Tournament held at Costello Technology College.
The ladies’ competition was contested by five pairs, with the top seeds, BH Pegasus’ pair Hayley Burger and Lesley Acheson, winning all their games in the qualifying competition.
Second seeds Alison Hodgetts and Anu Davies, from BH Pegasus, also made the final, finishing second.
Viking pair Sophia and Linda Rapacioli came a close third, only one point behind.
Phoenix’s Alison Rendall/Averil Mason were fourth, while Amanda Marsden/Kim Street from BH Pegasus came fifth.
The top two then played in the final, with Burger and Acheson winning 30-29.
The men’s competition had two sections of five pairs. Tim Cooper (Viking) and Steve Harrison (BH Pegasus) were the scratch top seeds in Section A and won three games and narrowly lost the fourth to Hurst pair Stephen Lamb and John Spragg 30-29.
Lamb/Spragg won all their games to head the section, while BH Pegasus pair Ramsay Domloge and Veera Arunachalam were third. Vince Yong (Viking) and Prasanth Kumaran (BH Pegasus) came fourth and Phoenix’s Greg Sudell/Jon Thompson finished fifth.
Viking’s Simon Williamson and Ben Ansell won all their games in section B.
Their closest battle, which they won 30-28, came against fellow Viking players, Robert Jackson and Keith Miles, who finished second in the group.
LoddonSherpas’ Michael Nash/Hanif Rahman were third, followed by BH Pegasus’ Jason King/Kevin Harris and Andover’s father and son combination of Geoff and Tim Lewis.
The winners of the two sections played in the final and a very tense and exciting game was eventually won by Vikings’ Williamson and Ansell 30-25.
