LODDON Vale Indoor Bowling Club has created a great new initiative to get young people into the game of bowls.
The club based at the Leisure Park, is currently coaching a group of Year 10 students from Vyne Community School and is proving a big hit with the pupils as well as the coaches.
This is the first time that the club has done this and they are very keen to extend it to other schools in the area.
The Vyne are using the chance to learn bowls as part of the GCSE course, as one of the practical assessments.
Kevin Light, head of PE at the Vyne said: “This is the first time this sport has been on the syllabus, so we thought we would give it a go. When we drove here for the first session all the kids were very quiet, but on the way back to school they were really full of it and didn’t realise they would enjoy playing bowls so much.”
The six sessions have been organised by the club’s chief coach, Colin Roberts, helped by a number of other coaches.
Roberts said: “I think I can speak for all the coaches and say we have really enjoyed coaching the children and they have taken to the game like ducks to water.
“It is great to see and I hope some of them will take up the game at the club.”
Loddon Vale has a junior section which meets every Saturday morning from 10am to noon and is open to players aged six to 15, where coaching is given.
Roberts added: “We already have around 15 junior players, but it would be nice to have a few more and anyone is welcome to come along Saturday mornings and try the game.”
Any school that would like to get involved with this great initiative can contact Loddon Vale on (01256) 356507 – or, likewise, any young players who would like to take up the game.
