Adam joins jet set thanks to double win bonus

A TEENAGE golfer from Hook is looking forward to trips to California and Portugal after qualifying for two high-profile events.

Adam Copeland, who is 15 and lives in Rectory Road, will travel to America for the Callaway Golf Junior World Championships next month after winning a British Junior Golf Tour event at Woburn, in Buckinghamshire.

The Robert May’s School pupil shot 80 (+7) around the famous course to claim victory and followed this up days later by winning another event, this time at Collingtree Park, Northamptonshire, to qualify for British Junior Golf Tour Final in Portugal in October.

“I was not expecting to do so well in either event,” Copeland said. “I thought I might come in the top five but I did not think I had a chance of winning because there were a lot of good golfers playing.

“I was just ecstatic when I did win and still cannot believe it.”

The Callaway Golf Junior World Championships will take place at Torrey Pines, in San Diego, the course that hosted the 2008 US Open.

“I have been practising really hard because I want to do well in San Diego,” Copeland said. “That’s all I can do and I’m really excited.”

Copeland, who has a handicap of eight and is a member at both Tylney Park and Camberley Heath, has only been playing golf for three years but has set his sights on a career within the sport.

“I have not been playing for that long and am pleased with the way it has gone,” he said. “I have had a lot of support from my friends and family and it is just down to me now.

“Golf is my main priority at the moment. I would love to play on the European Tour but if that does not go to plan I would like to be a club pro.”
