ANAYA Patel came away with a bronze medal at the Cadet National Cup in Grantham.

The Basingstoke table tennis ace seeded five for the event, which sees the top 10 players in England play each other on a round-robin basis.

Patel won seven of her nine matches, including a superb 4-3 (9-11, 14-12, 7-11, 11-3, 5-11, 11-5, 11-2) victory over top seed Jasmin Wong.

Both Patel and Wong finished one win behind gold medallist Ruby Chan, Wong taking silver ahead of Patel and fourth-placed Mille Rogove on countback of results.

The medal was an extra present for Patel, who plays for the Kingfisher Club in Reading and who celebrated her 14th birthday on the Saturday.

She said: “I didn’t come here expecting to win a medal, so it’s good that I did. I just kept calm and didn’t try to think about the results but about how I was playing.

“I’s a really long tournament and quite tiring, so you have to try to keep your energy up.”
