TEENAGE ski star Sarah Woodward ended her week at the Delancey British Alpine Championships on a high with two silver medals in Tignes on Sunday.

The 17-year-old from Odiham, Hampshire, finished second in Under-18 category of the ladies’ junior Giant Slalom race, which meant she was the joint-second overall points scorer of the Championships.

The event, which runs from March 25 to April 6, is the most anticipated championship of the British alpine skiing calendar and features the best the nation has to offer, including Olympians Dave Ryding, Laurie Taylor, Alex Tilley and Charlie Guest.

The Championships also provide the chance for the most promising up and coming talent in the Delancey under-21 and under-18 squads, such as Woodward.

“It’s been really good, I’ve been pleased with my results,” said the youngster.

“I think I’ve been quite consistent this week which is quite a big step up for me, I finished the majority of runs without big mistakes which is something I’ve always struggled with, so I’m really pleased with that and I’ve ended up with some good results.

“I’m really happy with the bronze overall, quite unexpected, at the start of the season it was an aim for me, so that is good.

“It’s something to push for and I think everyone obviously gets very competitive at the British Champs, everyone wants to do well, so to come away with that is something I’m really proud of.”

Woodward is one of the rising young stars in British skiing and claimed the large pool of talent will spur her on to achieve more.

She said: “It’s really cool racing here, there’s so many great athletes around pushing me even harder to keep working next season and come back to the British Champs next year and do even better.

“The one thing I’ll take is to always fight in the races, in the slalom event I hiked on my first run then really charged on my second and a lot of the girls came out and I ended up on the podium, so that’s another medal and helps with the overall.

“So to keep fighting on all the courses is something I’ve really learnt.

“I’ve got some races coming up next week and I’ve had individual runs that have been quite good so that’s really confidence boosting, hopefully next week I can put two great runs together and get some more results.”
