BASINGSTOKE Hockey Men faced three games this weekend - two in the league and a quarter final in the National Cup.

They met Havant for their first game, and with unselfish passes from Todd Hutchinson and Dave Stones, Will Jewkes was able to secure his brace.

Leading for a long period, a well worked break allowed Havant a chance in the circle with a neat reverse finish securing a 2-2 draw.

The first of Sunday’s two games saw Croydon visit, and looking to build on Saturday’s performance, Basingstoke were comfortable in all aspects of the game.

Delivering an end of season win with four different goal scorers as captain Dean Record, Graham Garett-Lang, William Jewkes and Phil Stewart all hit the target, they ended the league season on a high with a 4-1 win.

Buoyant from victory Basingstoke took a 30 minutes break to face the higher leaguer Blackheath and Elthamians.

Basingstoke started patiently and absorbed the pressure and quality from their opposition.

Once settled, Basingstoke broke and Mark Smith’s pass released Todd Hutchinson who burnt up the pitch to find himself one on one with the keeper.

Cool composure and a clinical finish to go ahead. Blackheath took an equaliser from a penalty corner shot rebound off goalkeeper Adam Smith.

Both teams pressed on with good chances. With under ten minutes to go, Blackheath capitalised on Basingstoke’s tired legs to get the killer goal.

Basingstoke subbed goalkeeper Smith to put Kevin Robinson into kicking back, who had to make saves of his own but to no avail as Basingstoke’s cup run came to an end with a 2-1 defeat.

The seconds began their game against Winchester 10 points clear at the top of the table and started strong.

Within the first 10 minutes Phil Stewart took his first from a superb reverse stick strike into the bottom corner.

Basingstoke’s second came from a right slipped pass at a penalty corner tipped back into the middle and finished by Robbie Edwards.

Winchester pulled one back with a neat deflection but Basingstoke struck back with Stewart again finishing neatly in front on the goal.

Winchester fought back hard but some good defence and keeping from Basingstoke kept them at bay to win 3-1 and secure the league beyond a doubt with one further game to go.

The thirds took their final game with a convincing 5-1 win against Portsmouth and Southsea. Rixson scored three and Luke Warren two.
