THE popular family chess morning returns on Saturday at the Discovery Centre (Library) in the town centre.

The event is free and starts at 10.30am and all are welcome from grandmasters to beginners.

The Basingstoke Chess Club teams continue to have a busy season.

In the Southampton League the Basingstoke B team recorded a good 3-2 away win in Division Three over champions elect Southampton C.

The visitor's points came from wins by John Shaddick, Barry Kocan and Almeo Bontigao. Basingstoke are having a good season in the ultra tough Berkshire League Division One and look set to record their highest position for many years. In the most recent fixture the Sherborne Road side recorded a 4½-1½ win over Henley A.

The points came from wins by Steven Jones, Ivan Stipcevic, David Graham and Jamie Chilton plus a draw from Tim Chapman.

Two girls from Basingstoke Junior Chess club have been selected to play for Hampshire in the English County Schools Championships.

Yasmin Phillips and Lilly Beeson will travel to Swindon to compete in the one day competition in the next few weeks.

The Basingstoke Individual Chess Championships has reached the semi finals stage and the draw will see Liam Blanc face Shwetal Bhatt and Jamie Chilton or Adam Matthews will take on Ivan Stipcevic The winner will receive the Joe French Cup. Basingstoke Chess Club meet at Maydene in Sherborne Road every Wednesday. New and old members are welcome.
