BEECHDOWN B beat their D team 9-0 to extend their lead in Basingstoke and District Badminton League Mixed Division Two to eight points, writes PETER ASKEW.

Clean sheets for Mark Bayliss/Sandra Smith, Mike De Sousa/Alex Nagle and Chris Meakin/Nikki Acton consigned Beechdown D to their third defeat of the season.

In the same Division, Andover Sports B moved up to second place with a 8-1 win over Beechdown C.

Three wins for Graham Woodrow/Joanne Crome and Nithinarasu Veeraarasu/Kay Carrington-Fisher and a brace from Peter Sellers/Val Wheeler earned the win, with only a single rubber from Beechdowns’ Tim Williams and Sam Hamilton preventing the whitewash.

In the Ladies 4 League Beechdown A’s team of Sandra Smith, Nikki Acton, Cathryn Perkins and Sam Hamilton moved to top spot with a 4-2 away win over Phoenix, who were playing in their first match since promotion to the top tier.

In Open Division One, Waverley A are now top following a 8-1 win over Andover.

Only a win for Andover pair Tim Hunt/Steve Trussell in the fourth rubber prevented a Waverley clean sweep.

Trebles from Phillip Jaap/Andrew Mountford and Neil Atkins/Peter Bevell and a double from Ian Aherne/Wayne Drake secured the win, as Waverley look to go one better than their runners-up spot last season.

Nine points gathered from two away games were enough to bring newly promoted Hurst A within one point of leaders Waverley A, albeit having played one game more. Hurst followed a 6-3 defeat to Andover Sports A with a 6-3 victory over defending champions Viking A.

There was one match in Division Two, which saw Waverley B record a 6-3 victory over a two pair Whitchurch side who battled hard to tie the rubbers played in the night 3-3 but were unable to make up the games they conceded.
