SILCHESTER’S Hannah Smith finished off a successful summer of tennis helping England to victory in the Four Nations Trophy in Glasgow, prising it from Scotland for the first time in over 10 years.

England took on the best of Scotland, Ireland and Wales in three days of tennis with a 12 strong team across three age groups under-12, 14 and 18.

Smith qualified for the England team following the success of her West Hants under-14 girls team winning the National Premier Team title.

On day one England took on hosts and favourites Scotland.

Smith played Lucia Rizza, winning the first set comfortably 6-2, but then losing the second set 6-2 leading to a third set match tie break with Smith winning 10-4.

Overall the under-14 England team drew the tie with Scotland three matches all, heading Day two saw Smith match up against Ireland’s Juliana Carton, in a hard fought battle Smith lost in two sets 6-4 6-4 but with victories by her team mates saw the tie end in a draw.

So this left them needing a 6-0 win against Wales on the final day to secure the overall victory for England.

Day three started well for England taking an early 3-0 win with both the boys singles and the first girls singles match going England’s way. Smith played against Welsh number one Heaton but soon found herself 5-1 down in the first set, but hung on fighting back to win the next 12 games in a row to win the match 7-5 6-0.

The boys doubles made it 5-0 to England, so it was left to the girls pairing of Smith and Kristina Paskauskas to make sure of the tournament win.

Similar to Smith’s singles match earlier in the day the England pairing found themselves facing a set point against them at 5-2, but clawed it back to win 7-5 6-4 to take the Four Nationals crown.
