BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club had their most successful week of the new season so far, with their new development sixth team playing their first match.

The Ladies first team took on experienced Tulse Hill & Dulwich.

Tulse Hill and Dulwich made an attacking start to the game but Basingstoke were clinical on the counter attack and Catriona Bausor opened the scoring from a tight angle.

It took Tulse Hill and Dulwich until early on in the second half to execute a penalty corner to make the score 1-1.

Basingstoke continued to push back, with Roxy O'Dea scoring twice extending their lead.

Basingstoke went down to 10 players in the final five minutes which Tulse Hill and Dulwich capitalised on by switching their goalkeeper for an additional field player.

The pressure paid off and they scored from close range making the score 3-2.

Tulse Hill and Dulwich continued to press but were unable to draw level.

Basingstoke move up to fourth in the league.

The seconds looking to continue their winning form, welcomed Andover.

The game started evenly but the first half remained scoreless as all short corners were defended well by both teams.

Things opened up after the break, as Sarah Shearing had a short corner deflected onto the crossbar, and Andover won a penalty stroke which player of the match Elle Smith calmly saved.

Basingstoke finally broke the deadlock when Rachel Roberts drove up the left to play the ball into Amy Shore, calmly turning the Andover defender, slipping the ball to Gilly Dunning to dive to slot home with 10 minutes to go.

Andover continued to press but the solid defence held strong ensuring Basingstoke took the 3 points and a 1-0 win.

The thirds travelled to Andover, and demonstrated their intent early on with a Tania Bridge strike.

Basingstoke continued to dominate with Sharon Holden slotting one more past the Andover goalkeeper.

The second half saw Andover push forward but unable to convert, with Millie Cross making a goal-line save to prevent the goal.

Basingstoke counter-attacked with Tania Bridge scoring again, followed by Katie Hossick and Annabelle Johnson, final score 5-0.

The fourths welcomed the Isle of Wight and started strong, playing a confident passing game. Sue Pett opened the scoring with a deflection after 5minutes.

Ella Boyd then converted a short corner. The rest of the first half saw open play goals from Sue Pett, Saf Whitwham and Heidi Barker.

At the other end, Lillie Lawson kept the sheet clean from a couple of Isle of Wight breakaways – half time score 5-0.

The second half saw further Basingstoke dominance, with Heidi Barker adding another to her account, Jo Lockyer adding herself to the score-sheet with a hat-trick, whilst Olivia Wade’s solo effort from defence saw Basingstoke finishing the game in double figures 10-0.

The fifths began their season against City of Portsmouth.

With a new line-up for Basingstoke, the team worked hard in their new formation and the match was pretty equal with play in both ends of the pitch.

Both sides won short-corners however the score remained 0-0 at half time.

A goal came from Portsmouth in the form of a back reverse stick flick and Basingstoke couldn’t strike back, losing the game just 1-0.

Basingstoke fielded their first ever sixth Ladies team, who travelled to Haslemere.

Haslemere started strong but Basingstoke were able to hold their defensive line, commanded by Miranda Smith. Haslemere broke the deadlock with a short corner, and whilst the Basingstoke attack attempted to hit back, the Haslemere defence held fast.

Basingstoke’s Katie Wade in goal made some great saves however Haslemere were just too strong and managed to push 4 more past Basingstoke’s defence, winning 5-0.

Basingstoke Men’s first team travelled to Chichester bringing home their first win of the season.

Goals scored by Grant Rouse, Todd Hutchinson, Will Jewkes, and Dean Record.

The seconds started strong against Southampton University, with two short corner goals in the opening 10 minutes.

A well-worked short corner routine gifted Pete Hood a good chance which he reverse-stick struck into the net. Southampton struck back scoring a ferocious flick, also from a short corner but Basingstoke converted their second soon after.

Phil Stewart then found the back of the net from open play. Southampton University pressed hard in the second half, but Andy Goddard and Rob Lloyd both scored from open play, ending the match a resounding 5-1 win to Basingstoke.

The thirds also welcomed Southampton University, managing to hold the visitors to a 2-2 draw, with both John-Paul Vout and Adam Neighbour their scorers.

The fourths travelled to Alton and broke the deadlock early on through Greg Smith before Harrison Spicer Martinez added a second.

Alton clawed one back through a well executed drag flick but Basingstoke held the lead 3-1 at the break with Greg Smith striking home another.

Alton picked up the pace in the second half, pulling back two goals, meanwhile Greg Smith added two more to his account whilst Jacques Lourens added a sixth, final score 6-3 to Basingstoke.

Basingstoke Ladies Masters had their second match in the South Region league.

Having beaten West Berkshire in their first game, Basingstoke made the tactical decision to play with a kicking back.

They were able to play an attacking game and Basingstoke’s Debbie Ridger struck first, with a second from a composed Tania Bridge reverse stick lob.

Oxford counter attacked and took advantage of the ‘keeperless goal, drawing even.

Basingstoke again went ahead via a short corner as Jenny Rust pounced on a loose ball off the goalkeeper’s pads and were able to increase the lead further with Cath McCormick and then Leanne Smith finding the net – final score 5-2 to Basingstoke.

Basingstoke Youth Section were also in action this weekend.

The under-16 boys took on Haslemere, lost 4-1. The under-14 and under-12 boys visited Andover, but despite battling hard, lost 11-0.

The under-eight and under-10 mini teams took three teams at each age-group to their first tournament of the season against neighbouring clubs.

All showed great promise and whilst the U8’s won the majority of their matches, the U10s fared less well, but still didn’t lose any games.
