BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club Ladies opened their home campaign in fine style with a 5-0 win over Staines.

The home side started confidently and within a few minutes captain Catriona Bausor opened the scoring, slotting the ball easily past the Staines goalkeeper.

Basingstoke dominated but some last ditch defending by the visitors managed to keep the score 1-0 at half time.

In the second half Basingstoke converted with Kirsty Kent scoring from a well-worked short corner, Mel Trevaskis made a beauty of a pass to the waiting Lisa Scarborough to score top right.

Roxy O'Dea scored a smasher from close range but was denied a second by a goal line save from the Staines defence.

The final scoreline was 5-0 when Catriona Bausor made a solid connection with the ball to smash it into the Staines net.

The Ladies seconds travelled to Southampton and were soon in control of the game, with Cath McCormick capitalised on by lobbing the goalkeeper as a follow up from her saved shot.

Basingstoke soon went 2-0 up when they were awarded a penalty stroke which Sarah Mainprise-Tait calmly converted.

The ladies made it 3-0 just before half time when Jude Bird dispossessed the Southampton defence, playing the ball through to Gilly Dunning to strike home. Basingstoke won numerous penalty corners early on in the second half, two of which Sarah Shearing duly converted.

The visitors rounded off their 6-0 win with Jude Bird slotting home.

The thirds welcomed Isle of Wight, who took Basingstoke by surprise, scoring in the first few minutes.

Basingstoke were not at their free flowing best however Leah Redding and Nicky Dowds combined to drive down the right to the awaiting Tania Bridge to neatly slot home.

The Isle of Wight scored their second from a penalty corner to go into half time 2-1 up. The second half took a while to get going again with both teams struggling to create attacking moves with Nicky Ball making a diving stick save in the Basingstoke goal, whilst Tania Bridge struck wide.

The Isle of Wight scored again which gave Basingstoke fresh wind, with Sharon Holden confidently finishing a Tania Bridges run. Time ran out for Basingstoke who ended up losing 3-2.

The fourths travelled to Yateley. Yateley started with short lived as Basingstoke took possession.

After a lovely ball into the D, Lyn Wood slapped in a cracker.

Soon after, Saf Whitwham showed some classy individual skill to finish sweetly.

As the first half came to a close, Ulrike Maier claimed another goal after a bit of hockey pinball.

Maier struck again soon after half time with a cheeky deflection. To end the game, Jo Gault made a straight smash to finish it 6-0.

Basingstoke men's seconds visited Alton for their first game of the league campaign.

The game was evenly matched until Alex Miller took the lead with a penalty stroke.

A few poor tackles led to some cards, before Liam Harrison doubled the lead from a tight angle, settling what was becoming a nervy end to the game.

Alton had their fair share of chances however Basingstoke held onto a clean sheet and a well deserved 2-0 win.

The thirds travelled to Havant and despite being battered by the rain, their defence held for much of the game.

Craig Eales who not only ran the Clarendon marathon this weekend but also kept most Havant’s shots at bay, but was flummoxed by a goal that was seemingly ‘chinned’ into the goal to leave the final score 1-0.

The fourths welcomed Southampton and it took 10 minutes before Basingstoke were able to take the lead maintaining pressure with two more goals from well orchestrated short corners routines.

Southampton managed to sneak a ball inside the right post during a goalmouth scramble. Southampton applied pressure after half time and converted a further goal, rousing Basingstoke, who found their shape regrouping to capitalise one more time as the final score was 5-2 with goals from Jacques Laurens (2), Ross Cavalier (2) and Eliot Boyd.

The Men’s Vikings were in action against league newcomers Petersfield.

The Vikings started off well with a goal coming from Karl Neighbour taking them into the interval with a 1-0 lead.

The Vikings continue to press for more goals and it did not take long with link up play leading to a second for the Vikings coming from Adam Neighbour.

With 10 minutes left a short corner was again converted by Adam Neighbour to end the first win of the season the for Vikings 3-0.

Other results saw the Ladies fifth's lose 3-1 against Yateley, the men's first team lost 4-0 at Haslemere, and the fifths lost by the same scoreline against Alton.
