BACK in March Planet Ice started their annual Skating Stars competition in which 15 children aged six years old to 15 years old audition for a chance to get onto our Learn to Skate course.

After each course five skaters are eliminated until there was a final five made up of Merle Sullivan (aged six), Thomas Benwell (12), Dominic Benwell (7), Megan Grant (14) and Charlotte Rand (14).

The fab five then took part in the show and skate programme, where they learned how to use the skills from skate excellence and turn them into a routine. This was judged by semi-professional ice skater Vicky Hartwell as well as the Basingstoke and Deane Mayor Paul Frankum.

The gala started with a number of the Basingstoke figure skaters doing their competition routines The fab five then skated with the rest of the show and skate pupils, before they performed solos on which they were judged.

After much discussion Megan Grant was placed first, ahead of Dominic Benwell with Merle Sullivan in third. Charlotte Rand, Thomas Benwell came joint fourth.

The Mayor presented the prizes and they would like to thank him for attending and judging as well as Hartwell.

The Basingstoke skaters are next in action in the Planet Ice’s Christmas Show Around the World in 80 Days and tickets are already on sale from the planet-ice.co.uk website or from the box office on (01256) 355266.
