HATCH Warren's Bradley Sutton and Myles Pillage from Plymouth produced an impressive display to finish 15th in the Men’s Relay on their Modern Pentathlon World Championships debuts in Cairo.

Things could have actually been even better for the British pair, but an unfortunate draw in the horse riding element saw them eliminated from the discipline, ruining their chances of a top 10 finish in a high quality an experienced field many of whim competed at the Rio Olympics.

This is the third time this season the teenagers had teamed up in a relay having already done so at the European Championships in Minsk and Junior European Championships in Barcelona.

As on those two occasions, the young British duo led the way in the swim, with their time of 1min 48.62sec over a second clear of any other team.

The Brits more than held their own in the fencing hall, recording 17 victories and 15 defeats in the ranking round.

A further victory followed in the bonus round saw the Brit finish seventh in the discipline standings.

As a result, the Pentathlon GB National Training based duo found themselves in an impressive 6th place after the opening two disciplines.

However, as is so often the case in modern pentathlon, one small thing can turn a day on its head and it turned out to be an unfortunate draw in the ride that would be their downfall.

On a horse that had already caused difficulty in its first round, Pillage enjoyed a good warm-up with no issues. But once he entered the arena it was a different story, with the horse refusing to leave the handover area and asa result Brits picked up no points from the discipline, seeing them drop to 15th in the overall standings and ending their chances of a top 10 finish.

The concluding laser run saw the pair perform well with University of Bath student Sutton’s shooting particularly impressive as they maintained their 15th place.

Despite the disappointment in the riding arena, it was still a positive day for pair as invaluable competition experience was gained.
