BASINGSTOKE Disc Golf Club are celebrating after holding the World Flying Disc Federation World Overall Flying Disc Championships at Down Grange which proved to be a great success.

The club are now hoping that by hosting this event, the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council can be persuaded to put up permanent baskets in Down Grange.

The Basingstoke club beat off bids from the USA, Asia and Europe to host the bi-annual event, which is the pinnacle of disc sport, the overall competition consisted of seven different frisbee disciplines including accuracy, distance, discathon, disc golf, self caught flight, and the team games of double disc court and freestyle.

The open juniors category proved to be great success for the local players as Ned Morris was first and Declan Bransby second and both 14-year-olds regularly play at Down Grange. Emily Hamilton did well in the same event, but had to pull out of the last round due to injury.

In the open men’s event Shaun Lewis came in 32nd and women’s open Jenny Lewis was 11th.

They all faced stiff competition from over 100 players from right across the world, including Canada, USA, New Zealand, India, Germany and Sweden.

The club would like to thank all the volunteers for their help over a week long competition as without them it would not have been so successful.
