SUCCESS proved to be a family affair for the Coveney’s in the Triathle European Championships in Setubal, Portugal.

Mother Cat and sons Cameron and Charlie of the Wessex Wyverns Pentathlon Club all qualified for the event, which involved repeated laps of continuous shoot/swim/runs of various distances according to age.

First up was 13-year-old Cameron, who shot really consistently and came an incredibly close third by .7 of a second in the under-15’s boys event. He was part of a clean sweep from Great Britain for the podium places.

The teenager also competed in the GB Mixed Relays team for under-15s and, to his delight gained the silver medal.

Younger brother Charlie (10) competed in the under-11’s age group and shot really well, coming second, again in a GB clean sweep on the podium.

Then to complete the family’s medal haul for the day, Cat gained a silver medal in her Masters race.

After a day’s rest and training, the Biathle European Championships were held on the Sunday, which is a continuous run/swim/run event.

Charlie sped around his course winning by eight seconds and thus becoming European Champion for the under-11’s.

Cat missed out on a medal but finished with a fierce last 600m sprint to overtake a number of other competitors and finish a very worthy fourth, to the delight of her boys.

Gemma Bigg, a fellow Wessex Wyverns member, also competed in the Biathle in the senior female over 21’s age group, braving the difficult tidal conditions to come fourth in her first ever open water competition for the GB team.
