BASINGSTOKE Chess Club are celebrating after an superb double victory from Daniel Yu and Daniel Shek at the Delancey Giga-Finals held in Reading.

The two young players won the Ultimo title with style, a competition which brings together the best chess youngsters from the southern half of the country who have won through from the Mega-finals.

Daniel Yu who attends Daneshill School won the under 10 title with a perfect score of 6wins out of six.

Yu adds this title to the West of England Championship success as well as the Basingstoke Junior Chess Championship which he won recently.

Coaching at the school is provided by Grandmaster Nick Pert who must take enormous credit for producing so many talented players.

Over the past few seasons Yu has munched his way through the junior rank players.

Now having made his debut in the Basingstoke Chess Club adult team he is now munching his way through the adult section with wins.

Not to be outdone Daniel Shek won the under eight Ultimo title and again with the perfect score of six wins of six.

Shek competes in many Junior Congress’s around the region and with considerable success.

Shek was a winner of the West of England Championships. Daniel Shek attends Yateley Manor School and is also a member of the Frimley Junior Chess Club.

As well as the two Daniel’s Basingstoke Junior Chess Club are producing a considerable number of very talented boys and girls at the game who seem to improve rapidly.

The Discovery Centre/Library will be the venue for a Chess morning on Monday July 31. The start time is 10 am and continues until 1pm and all are welcome.

Due to increasing membership Basingstoke are entering an extra team into the Southampton Chess League for the forthcoming season.

New members are always welcome to the Bridge and Chess club in Sherborne Road.
