PARA powerlifter Alfie Wright continues to keep herself on track for qualification for the Gold Coast Commonweath Games in 2018.

This was after she won another British title at Rioch Arena in Coventry.

The 44-year-old from Basingstoke travelled to the West Midlands and returned as bench press champion in the 62 plus kg category.

Wright has mobility issues and needs to wear a brace on her knee. Having been a keen runner when she was younger, she only took up the sport of powerlifting in the past two years.

She now is trained by James McCallion at the Basingstoke Aquadrome and said: “I am very proud to have won a gold medal as I had been ill in the three months leading up to the competition.”

With the judging up to Olympic standard at the British event, many of the lifters found it it a lot harder to make their lifts count.

Wright lifted 64kg to win, this was after having a 67kg lift not accepted due to a harsh call on her wrists by the judges.

Wright said: “The judging was very strict , which saw so many of the lifters panic. I just put my music on to zone out."

The Basingstoke powerlifter’s season has not finished yet as Wright is looking to join British Powerlifting. This she hopes will help her chase European Championship qualification for an event to be held in the Ukraine.
