THE Basingstoke Chess Club held their annual chess prize giving evening in front of a good attendance at their home in Sherborne Road.

Graham Merry from the Basingstoke Gazette and former secretary Hugh Browning presented the many awards from a very successful season for the club.

Basingstoke's B team won the Southampton League Division Four and Peter Beldaus received the league’s trophy.

Basingstoke's A team narrowly missed out in the same league in Division Three, as they finished with the runners up awards.

The same outcome also happened in the Borders League Division Three, where the team came very close in taking the title.

As well as the team awards, three individual awards were also presented on the evening with Daniel Yu winning the Basingstoke Junior Individual Championship Robin Higgs Trophy.

The Charles Henshaw Shield for players graded under 120 went to Adam Matthews.

The Joe French Cup for the Basingstoke Individual Chess champion was won by James Chilton.

The evening was concluded by a very enjoyable lightning tournament.

l The popular family chess mornings continue tomorrow at the Discovery Centre/Library from 10am until 1pm.

All are welcome to attend.
