EIGHT members of Basingstoke’s Su-Ha-Ri Karate School enjoyed great success in the Wado International Karate-Do Federation in London.

In the kata (form) categories, their youngest member Diya Shanmugaraj started off the medal hunt with a bronze in the under-eights.

Lexie Green and Sibi Kumara also took bronze in the girls’ 10 to 11 years and boys 14 to 15 years respectively.

Mia Lane broke the pattern with a gold in the girls’ 12 to 13 years.

Newcomer Orla Parmar performed well in the ladies’ category, but was denied a medal as several of her opponents were current or former European Champions.

The Kumite (fighting) events started well with a gold from Shanmugaraj in the under-eights.

Green took bronze in the 10 to 11’s. Tadley’s Lucas Spiers took bronze in the 12 to 13 years category.

Then the 13-year-old stepped up into the 14 to 15 years category, where he took the silver medal.

Sibi Kumara also won bronze in the 14 to 15’s. Lane also stepped up an age category into the girls’ 14 to 15’s and fought hard to take the silver.

The three-man team events rounded off the day. Shanmugaraj teamed up with Popley’s Shravya Subash and Max Upton from Newbury in the under 10’s. Although an inexperienced team, they fought well to take the bronze.

Then Bishop Challonor’s Anthony Parmar and Lucas Spiers teamed up with Farnham’s Jacob Fairhead for the 12 to 13 years boys’ team.

Unsurprisingly the ‘Dream Team’ who took gold at the European Championships, breezed through to add another gold to their collection.

Finally, Spiers and Lane stepped up an age category to join Sibi Kumara in the mixed 14 to 15’s team and won another gold.

Coach Kevin Crine said: “It was a great medal haul, especially considering that a lot of the medals came from people competing in the next age group up.”
