BASINGSTOKE Gymnastics Club tumblers started their quest to qualify for the British Championships in Nottingham, by taking part in the Southern Qualifications.

There is a basic score that the tumblers have to achieve, in order to qualify and they also have to finish in the top 16 after the two competitions.

For some tumblers it was a first competition, and there were also tumblers from Basingstoke Gymnastics Club who are in the national squad and who had a great deal of pressure to maintain their position.

Megan Kealy put out a new run with a double straight somersault with two twists.

Kealy finished with a very high score in the 17 to 21 section to take the gold medal.

Kaitlin Lafferty had an injury last year which took her out of full training for nine months.

She returned in the 15 to 16 category with her double somersault with one twist to take the silver medal.

Maddie Gardiner put out her first run which was not planned but she managed to land on her feet and finished her first run in eighth place.

She managed to pull herself up and put out six whips to double straight and her score was so high that it put her in the gold medal position.

As a youngster Yasmin Hamilton-Giles was British champion. Although she worked hard to get that standard back, growth spurts and other challenges have played their part in restricting her advance.

However, she worked hard in the gym and this was rewarded as she finished in bronze medal position and returned to the rostrum.
