ODIHAM hockey star Alex Danson scored her 100th international goal, as England lost to the Netherlands 4-3, after an epic penalty shoot-out.

New England captain Danson led by example as she started her side comeback after the visitor's led 2-0 inside 15 minutes.

Danson netted the home side's opening goal after 43 minutes as she squeezed the ball under the Dutch goalkeeper 10 minutes later Sophie Bray equalised.

Danson led from the front as she scored the first penalty, to give her side the early advantage in the shoot-out.

However, she also had a penalty stroke well saved by Anne Veenendaal as the Dutch moved into a 2-1 lead with one player each left to take a penalty.

Hollie Webb then stepped up and calmly rounded Veenendaal to level the scores before Hinch saved from Laurien Leurink to take things to sudden death.

Both sides then scored and missed one apiece before Webb thought she had scored the winner, only for it to be ruled out after the ball was deemed to have touched her foot.

Frederique Matla then found a way past Hinch with a shot that proved to be the winner, as Nicola White’s penalty stroke following a foul on Sophie Bray was well saved by Veenendall.

Meanwhile it has also been announced that the GB hockey teams will be part of a new Hockey Pro League in 2019.

The new league will see the nine best men’s and nine best women’s teams from around the world play each other home and away every year, across a total of 144 games.

The fixtures will take place in national stadiums, week in, week out, from January to June.

The Hockey Pro League will provide teams with a way of qualifying for the Olympics, both the England men’s and women’s teams will become GB in the two years prior to the Olympic Games.
