NOW is the time to vote for your Sporting Hero in the Place to be Proud Awards, which are organised by Destination Basingstoke.

Judging has taken place and there is now a shortlist of three to choose from.

The trio up the award are Daisy Coleman, Jim Feighery Murphy and the Amos family The winner of the Sporting Hero category is to be decided by a public on line poll and everyone is encouraged to vote to make sure their favourite is crowned.

“As usual there were an extraordinary selection of sporting heroes nominated, a fantastic representation of the wealth of talent and commitment to sport in our community, I’m pleased it isn’t up to us to choose.”, said Felicity Edwards, managing director of Destination Basingstoke.

Powerboat racer Daisy Coleman has been described by many as a shining example and inspiration for others to follow.

She fulfilled a nine year career in the army serving tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Shortly after being discharged through injury she decided to take up Powerboating alongside a full time job.

Having not set foot in a power boat until four years ago she has certainly made an impact as along with her brother Sam have been crowned world champions this year.

Karate fighter Jim Feighery Murphy is a great character and superb sportsmen and is the life and soul of the Su-Har-Ri Karate Club.

Alongside competing at the highest levels he is a real sportsmen and spends hours of dedication coaching and encouraging younger competitors.

Feighery Murphy helped the Su-Ha-Ri Men’s team win the WIKF British title and most impressively the WIKF Men’s team won the EKF All Styles title for the second year running.

He always gives 100 per cent when training and is an inspiration to others.

The Amos Family have played their part in success of Basingstoke RFC based at Down Grange.

In just four seasons, husband and wife Russell and Michele Amos, assisted by their son Lloyd, have built the girls Basingstoke Rugby teams from scratch.

Basingstoke RFC now has flourishing Under-13s, U15s and U18s girls teams.

Girls from Basingstoke have gone on to play in Premiership and for England under-20s.

Michele Amos has been a Safeguarding Officer for Basingstoke RFC from 2007 to 2012 and also the Safeguarding Manager for Hampshire RFU since 2012, looking after 30 clubs across the county.

The couple collectively put in a huge amount of hours to support local Rugby and demonstrate a tremendous amount of commitment to the sport.
