BASINGSTOKE skier Laurie Taylor enjoyed a double success at the British National Alpine Ski Championships in Tignes.

He won silver and bronze in the senior slalom and giant slalom respectively.

He was only beaten in the slalom by World Cup star Dave Ryding by 1.24 seconds, after he completed a combine run in 1min 27.94 and was comfortably ahead of bronze medallists Billy Major.

After taking his second medal of the championships, Taylor said: "I am really happy. It was a tough field among the top few guys. The first run had good skiing, but I was perhaps a bit too safe . I went for it a little more in the second run."

Previous to this the Basingstoke skier won a bronze medal in the giant slalom, crossing the finish line in a time of 1:57.89 minutes to finish behind Charlie Raposo and Major.

After his first medal, Taylor said: "I’m happy with third place. My second run was much better than my first, but I just need to be a bit faster in order to climb the podium a bit more,"

“I think I turned a little too much in the first run, but that’s just how it goes sometimes."

Having won silver and bronze earlier in the week, the 21-year-old could not add to his tally in the under-21 competitions in the same disciplines.

In the giant slalom, Taylor set an opening run time of 50.56 seconds, the fastest in the field, but after skiing out of the course on his second attempt, his dreams of another medal were hastily cut short.

But that’s not to say Taylor rued his missed opportunities, admitting he had been pleased with his performance on the piste.

“I had a good first run and set the fastest time of everyone, so I’m pretty happy with how that went,” he said.

“The second didn’t quite go to plan though, I just didn’t have the right line and then I skied out."

In the under-21 slalom, with heavy snowfall overnight making for difficult conditions on the slopes.

Taylor skied out on his opening run as the podium evaded him once more.
