OLYMPIC epee fencer Leonora Mackinnon took the Senior Ladies crown which capped a great 2016 for the 22-year-old.

Having targeted the 2020 Olympic the fencer from East End managed to qualify for Rio where she represented Canada.

She was the youngest fencer in the competition, but made it through to the last 32 in Brazil, before being beaten 15-8 by silver medallist and current World Champion Rossella Flamingo from Italy.

Earlier on the same day, she beat Simona Pop from Romania 15-10 During the qualification season Mackinnon beat the world number one and was a member of the team who won gold at the PanAm championships, beating the Americans which she was delighted about.

Last year, she took a break from university at St Mary's Twickenham to make her Olympic dream come true.

She is now back studying, but the Canadian and British number one has another busy year as she looks to climb up the world rankings.

Mackinnon said: "Wining this award is great and last year of course the highlight was going to Rio. Now the aim is to make Tokyo so I will be working hard to lower my world ranking of 46.

I have the Pan Am games in June and then the World Championships in Leipzig a month later and I also want to go the University Games in Montreal in August.

Top young bowls star Nicole Rogers came second, while last year's winner karate's Lindsey Andrews came third
