PARA powerlifter Alfie Wright has her eyes firmly set on qualifying for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in 2018, as well as the Olympics in Tokyo two years later.

The 44-year-old from Basingstoke is looking for sponsorship to make her dreams of representing both England and Great Britain come true .

Wright has mobility issues and needs to wear a brace on her knee. Having been a keen runner when she was younger, she only took up the sport of powerlifting in the past two years.

At the end of last month, Wright started 2017 in great style with victory at the English Open in Milton Keynes in the 62+kg category.

She said: “It was a great way to start the year and I am hoping to be classified in July for the World Class programme.

“I really enjoy powerlifting and really feel I can get to go to the Gold Coast and Tokyo.”

Last July, the Basingstoke powerlifter finished second at the British Open and is currently ranked number two in Britain.

She trains at the Basingstoke Sports Centre in Festival Place, where she is trained by Gareth Riddy, who is also a pain and movement specialist.

He has been the main inspiration who helped her get to where she is today.

She also has a nutritionist – Alex Ritson – who writes all her diet plans to maximise her strength and help to keep her at the correct weight.

Wright knows that if she is to reach the heights she is aiming at, it is not going to be cheap.

And she has been boosted by the news of a partial sponsorship deal from Outlaw Laboratory for food supplements.

She also has a lot of training costs in the form of gym membership, personal trainer, nutritionist and travel to competitions.

To help Wright in her quest to compete on the other side of the world in years to come, she has a Justgiving page alfie wright and her Makeachamp page under the name Alfie Wright.
