THE Basingstoke Hockey Club Ladies beat visiting previous league leaders Teddington 1-0 to move to the top.

The match started with high tempo from both teams, but home side soon gained the upper hand and pressured the Teddington defence, which led to winning a short corner, which was excellently converted via a deflection from Fi Parker, leaving the Teddington goalkeeper stranded.

Basingstoke continued to press high, but were unable to score any more goals before half time.

Teddington started the second half aggressively and pressuring the home defence, but they held strong through good direction from Basingstoke goalkeeper and player of the match Gemma Carswell.

The home side got back into the game but were unable to extend their lead but were pleased with the three points.

Basingstoke travel to London Wayfarers on Saturday, hoping to extend their lead at the top of the table.

Elsewhere in the ladies section, the seconds won 2-1 at home against Alton. Basingstoke went 1-0 up in the first half thanks to a rebound slotted home by Kirsty Brown.

In the second half, Alton equalised with 10 minutes to go, but Gilly Dunning restored Basingstoke’s lead shortly after through a precise strike from the end of the circle.

The thirds came home from Haslemere with a point following a thrilling 2-2 draw.

Tania Bridge scored first for Basingstoke following good build up play from Gill Rust and Michelle Rounding, before Haslemere equalised.

Basingstoke then restored their lead shortly before half time thanks to captain Catherine Woodliffe.

Basingstoke continues to press in the second half but Haslemere scored through a short corner to share the points.

The fourths continued their strong performance this season with a 4-0 win at home against Southampton.

The ladies were 3-0 up at half time through goals from Sue Pett, Amy Samball and Hannah Wheeler, and added a fourth in the second half through left back Olivia Wade. The fifths lost 1-0 away to Alton.

In the men’s section, the first team came home from Reigate with three points following a 3-2 victory.

Basingstoke went 1-0 down early on in the game, but equalised through Dean Record following good pressing from Todd Hutcheson and Mark Smith. Basingstoke went into half time 2-1 up following Record’s second after a good drive through the Reigate defence from Paul Dowers.

Early in the second half, Basingstoke went down to nine men but Reigate failed to convert despite having a number of chances.

Likewise, Reigate then went down to nine men but held on.

Basingstoke then conceded with five minutes to go through a precise pass into the circle.

Reigate pressed high to go for the winner, but it was Basingstoke who capitalised through a quick break from Josh Weir and Hutcheson, who converted on the reverse from a tight angle to secure the points.

Elsewhere in the men’s section, the thirds remain top following a 3-2 win away at Chichester.

The fourths went down 8-1 away to a strong Winchester team.

In division Nine, the Vikings lost 4-0 at home to Lavant and the fifths went down 2-0 away at Aldershot and Farnham.
