BUCKSKIN darts ace Paul Hogan made the last 16 of the British Darts Organisation World Championships at Lakeside in Frimley Green. after a titanic 3-2 victory over Welshman Martin Phillips.

Former World Championship quarter-finalist Paul Hogan survived a valiant fightback from former World Master and number 16 seed Martin Phillips to win the deciding fifth set.

Hogan won seven of the opening eight legs as he stormed into a two sets lead, but Phillips fought back bravely, winning six of the following nine legs to level the match at 2-2.

The victory for Hogan sets up a second round encounter with top seed and red-hot favourite Glen Durrant.

As in his first game at Lakeside, Hogan nicknamed Crocodile Dundee won the first set winning all three legs.

The pick of these being the middle leg which saw him hit 121, 140 and 140.

The Buckskin player lost the first leg of the second set, but hit back with his first maximum and finished with 70 in two darts on his way to taking the set 3-1.

Hogan took the first leg of set three, but Phillips staring defeat in the face responded with three consecutive 140's and a clinical 81 finish with a double 16 finish in 12 darts.

The Basingstoke replied to lead 2-1 leaving him one leg away from another straight sets victory.

However, the number 16 seed was no going anywhere and won the next two legs and the fourth set to level the match.

Hogan held throw in the opening leg of decider after Phillips wired on double seven for a 122 out shot.

The Welshmen tied the match again, but Hogan was not to be denied and two 140s helped him to take the third leg and his 14th 140 of the match saw him finish with a 78 out shot as he he hit double six.
