PHIL Dixon and Clare Munns were double winners at the annual Basingstoke and District Tennis League finals day.

Munns of Beechdown won her first title without hitting a ball in anger in the ladies singles due to her opponent being injured.

She then teamed up with fellow Beechdown player Andrea Butcher as the defending champions faced Overton’s Zoe Taylor and Nina McCann.

Games in the first set of the final went with service until it reached 5-5, at which point Butcher and Munns broke serve on their way to winning the set 7-5.

In the second set the champions got off to a good start taking a 2-0 and 3-1 lead.

Despite Taylor and McCann breaking back, they lost the second set 6-3.

It was the third year running that Butcher and Munns took the title.

The final event of the day, saw Munns denied a hat-trick of wins as along with Hoss Ashraf, they lost to Old Basing pair and Dixon and Sandie Benham.

Games went with serve until the sixth game, when Ashraf and Munns managed to break serve to give them a 4-2 lead.

However, this just seemed to inspire Dixon and Benham who won the first set 6-4.

Although Ashraf and Munns won the opening game of the second set, they soon found themselves 5-1 down and it was left to Dixon to serve out the second set winning it 6-2.

Dixon’s second success came in the men’s doubles final as he teamed up with Old Basing team mate James Chamberlain to face Waverley duo Perveez Mirza and Malcolm McPhail.

The first five games went with serve before some power hitting from Chamberlain allowed the Old Basing pair to take the first set 6-4.

An closer second set saw both pairs have opportunities to win the set. It was eventually decided by a tie break with Chamberlain and Dixon winning it 8-6.

The first event of the day was the men’s singles final between Waverley’s Mirza and Totally Tennis’ Tim Rice in his first final.

Rice won the toss and elected to serve, but after a lengthy game Mirza eventually broke serve to take a lead which he never let go winning the match 6-0, 6-0, despite several games went to deuce.

The league would like to thank Oakley Tennis Club for hosting the day.
