Basingstoke Hockey Ladies moved to the summit of South Division Two after they won their top of the table clash at Epsom 2-1.

The visitors started strongly, playing the ball around at speed and putting the Epsom defence under pressure.

Basingstoke were soon rewarded when Tanya Warner fed the ball through the Epsom defence for Catriona Bausor to go one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Bausor was brought down by the Epsom goalkeeper and a penalty stroke was awarded, which Claire Bowman calmly slotted home.

Basingstoke’s defence worked tirelessly to keep the ball out of their defensive area and feed the midfield and forward line.

Epsom however got a goal back leaving the score 1-1 at the break.

The visitors built their intensity, winning several short corners, which were well defended, before the pressure finally took its toll on Epsom.

Bowman dribbled into Epsom’s defensive circle before playing the ball to the right post for Claire Griffiths to calmly slot home and secure a 2-1 victory.

In seconds went down 2-1 at home to Haslemere. The visitors led 1-0 at half-time, but this gave Basingstoke the determination they needed and they soon equalised from Gilly Dunning. An even second half, saw Haslemere score the winner.

The thirds travelled to Gosport looking for their first win of the season, but they were 2-0 down at half-time. The visitors took control of the game in the second half and had many chances including a penalty stroke, but could only convert one through Hannah Watt.

The fourth team lost their first game of the season, going down 2-1 at home to Eastleigh, but still remain top. Sharon Holden scored their goal.

The fifths went down 3-0 away at Aldershot and Farnham.

BASINGSTOKE Hockey men’s fifth team finally got their season started with an impressive 2-0 win over Hants Division Nine leaders Alton.

The first half was very eventful with both teams having good chances but neither converting.

Basingstoke were the first to capitalise on their chances early on in the second half, when Mikhail Saujani slotted home a short corner routine to go 1-0 up.

Alton continue to press the Basingstoke defence, but they held strong with some great defensive play from player of the match Pradip Saujani.

With 10 minutes to go, Basingstoke extended their lead thanks to Stefan Bonser, who played an excellent shot into the net from a tight angle.

The win moved the winner’s up to seventh in their league.

The thirds continued their winning form with a 4-1 win over Southampton.

Basingstoke were 2-0 up at half time thanks to a Phil Stewart brace including a short corner drag flick.

The men added a third thanks to Dan Holding, before Southampton pulled a goal back. It was left to Stewart's hat-trick strike to secure the points which moved the thirds up to third.

The second team won 5-1 away at Andover with goals from Josh Weir (2), Ben Shaughnessy (2), Mark Easto and Greg Smith.

The men’s first team welcomed Chichester, looking to make amends for last week’s mistakes, but they were soon 2-0 down.

After this, Basingstoke started to gain possession through the midfield and create chances but couldn’t capitalise in the first half.

However early in the second half, captain Andy Preston pressed up from sweeper and played the ball through to Grant Rouse, who scored.

Basingstoke converted their second short corner of the half, with Dean Record deflecting into the bottom corner and the game ended 2-2.

The fourths went down 4-3 away at Poole. Having been 2-0 down at half time, they had a strong second half and scored through a short corner from Eliot Boyd and 2 from Stuart Coleshill, but Poole secured the 3 points.

The men’s Vikings lost 6-0 away at Bournemouth.
